It’s another Top Ten Tuesday! It’s hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. You can find questions on their blog if you want to follow along.
Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book
This is a hard one for me. There’s a lot that makes me want to read a book, but thinking of things that turn me off is a little bit harder. I like to give books a chance but there are a few things that just don’t do it for me.
Insta-love
Just ugh! I need build up. Time for the characters to fall in love. Time to get to know each other. The exception is if there’s a reason for their insta-love like being werewolf mates. Even then though, I still want their insta-love to be tempered by friendship.
Ugly Cover
I’m not going to post covers here I don’t like, because I don’t want to hurt any feelings, but it’s true that an ugly cover makes it very, very hard for me to pick up a book.
Steamy Scenes
I know a lot of people like when things get hot and heavy, but I’m not one of them. This is one I can’t even look past. If I know it’s there I won’t even pick it up.
Hard Sci-fi
My husband loves this genre. I do not. Sad to say it, but when they start talking and every other word is going over my head, I just can’t do it.
Fairies/Fae
I don’t know what it is about the Fae, but it’s hard for me to like them. When I find out a book has Fae in it, it’s really difficult for me to pick it up.
Angels
Like Fae, I just can’t do angels. If someone highly recommends a book to me, I’ll try it, but only grudgingly. This is just one thing that isn’t for me. Oddly enough, demons don’t bother me, but usually are connected to angels so, no go.
Most of these turn me off too. There may be some exceptions if the book is well-written but I’m picky about the books I read.

Exactly. I know there are some good books out there with this stuff, but you have to be choosy about the books you pick up. Usually it takes a suggestion from someone else.

I’ve been in a MASSIVE sci-fi mood lately – but I’ve never attempted hard science fiction. I don’t think that I could handle it either. All the tech stuff would go over my head and I would end up more confused and lost than anything!

Exactly! I love the light stuff, but all the techy stuff is too much for my little brain, lol.

Oops forgot to say that my husband also loves hard science fiction. His favourite show ever is Stargate SG1 and I hate it! He’s hoping that my book reading mood will eventually make me interested in watching that show…… keep dreaming!

That’s awesome that he does too. Our husbands must be at least a little alike. Hope your book mood rubs off a little so you can enjoy it, lol!

instalove, MC romances, triangles, surprise pregnancy, bad adults (mostly YA), cliffhangers, open endings, women who hide pregnancies and come back with children years later. Sometimes just formulation. Like if I can void the names and read second book in a series and it sounds exactly like the first drives me nuts

Yes! Especially cliffhangers. I just got done reading one yesterday, and I’m all angry about it now, lol.

Yup steamy scenes and scifi no thanks!

Insta-love is a pet peeve of mine too and like you, I would prefer the book to not just be all sex – I think that’s why I don’t read NA as that’s what the plot usually revolves around based on the books I’ve seen rated favourably and skimmed. And ugly covers do make it harder to pick up a book. Another thing I hate is a love triangle. I also avoid books dealing with mermaids/mer people.

I usually avoid mermaids too. I’m not exactly sure why, but they usually drive me nuts. They’re not as much of an insta hate as fae and angels though. And yeah, I usually avoid NA too. Just not my thing.

I don’t like explicit scenes, either. I feel like I’m intruding upon a private affair I don’t need to be involved in. Fade to black, please!

I find Hard-SciFi really hard to read as well. It made it onto my list, under the name of “Robot/Cyborg World”.

Yup, it’s a tough one. I do like the cyborg named Cinder though. That was a good book. But usually they are a no go for me.

Insta-love should have made my list! This is one of my big pet peeves (I’m also not a fan of May to December pairings) – I don’t believe in love at first sight, so it kicks me out of the story every time.
LikeLike
Oh, yes. May to December pairings are not my thing either. It totally isn’t for me.

Heh, I love the image choices that you made to go along with this post 🙂 I absolutely used to feel that way about faeries, but Sarah J. Maas’s books have me changing my tune a bit.

Thanks! I feel like I’ve been hiding in a hole somewhere. I didn’t know Sarah J. Maas’s books had faeries in them! Interesting.

I feel so bad, but I feel the exact same way about ugly covers… I hate myself for it, but I just can’t help it. Insta-love is another one of those that’s so prolific, especially in YA! Why? Why?? UGH!

It’s true about covers. Makes me feel bad too, but still happens anyway, lol. And insta love does seem to be extra prolific in YA. Bleh.

Great list! Most of these are definitely a huge turn off for me as well… Although I don’t mind fae (and I tend to tolerate angels). I’m allergic to a different supernatural creature instead: VAMPIRES.

I can see being allergic to vampires. There’s just been so many of them that it’s hard to find a unique take too.

I’m not a fan of hot and heavy either. It’s a bit too much sometimes.

Exactly! Glad I’m not the only one that feels that way!

I agree with pretty much all of these, except fairies, I actually kind of like them.
