It’s another Top Ten Tuesday! It’s hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. You can find questions on their blog if you want to follow along.

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book

This is a hard one for me. There’s a lot that makes me want to read a book, but thinking of things that turn me off is a little bit harder. I like to give books a chance but there are a few things that just don’t do it for me.

Insta-love

Just ugh! I need build up. Time for the characters to fall in love.  Time to get to know each other. The exception is if there’s a reason for their insta-love like being werewolf mates. Even then though, I still want their insta-love to be tempered by friendship.

Ugly Cover

I’m not going to post covers here I don’t like, because I don’t want to hurt any feelings, but it’s true that an ugly cover makes it very, very hard for me to pick up a book.

Steamy Scenes

I know a lot of people like when things get hot and heavy, but I’m not one of them. This is one I can’t even look past. If I know it’s there I won’t even pick it up.

Hard Sci-fi

My husband loves this genre. I do not. Sad to say it, but when they start talking and every other word is going over my head, I just can’t do it.

Fairies/Fae

I don’t know what it is about the Fae, but it’s hard for me to like them. When I find out a book has Fae in it, it’s really difficult for me to pick it up.

Angels

Like Fae, I just can’t do angels. If someone highly recommends a book to me, I’ll try it, but only grudgingly. This is just one thing that isn’t for me. Oddly enough, demons don’t bother me, but usually are connected to angels so, no go.

What instantly turns you off to a book?

  1. I’ve been in a MASSIVE sci-fi mood lately – but I’ve never attempted hard science fiction. I don’t think that I could handle it either. All the tech stuff would go over my head and I would end up more confused and lost than anything!

  2. Oops forgot to say that my husband also loves hard science fiction. His favourite show ever is Stargate SG1 and I hate it! He’s hoping that my book reading mood will eventually make me interested in watching that show…… keep dreaming!

  3. instalove, MC romances, triangles, surprise pregnancy, bad adults (mostly YA), cliffhangers, open endings, women who hide pregnancies and come back with children years later. Sometimes just formulation. Like if I can void the names and read second book in a series and it sounds exactly like the first drives me nuts

  4. Insta-love is a pet peeve of mine too and like you, I would prefer the book to not just be all sex – I think that’s why I don’t read NA as that’s what the plot usually revolves around based on the books I’ve seen rated favourably and skimmed. And ugly covers do make it harder to pick up a book. Another thing I hate is a love triangle. I also avoid books dealing with mermaids/mer people.

  5. Insta-love should have made my list! This is one of my big pet peeves (I’m also not a fan of May to December pairings) – I don’t believe in love at first sight, so it kicks me out of the story every time.

  6. Heh, I love the image choices that you made to go along with this post 🙂 I absolutely used to feel that way about faeries, but Sarah J. Maas’s books have me changing my tune a bit.

  7. I feel so bad, but I feel the exact same way about ugly covers… I hate myself for it, but I just can’t help it. Insta-love is another one of those that’s so prolific, especially in YA! Why? Why?? UGH!

  8. Great list! Most of these are definitely a huge turn off for me as well… Although I don’t mind fae (and I tend to tolerate angels). I’m allergic to a different supernatural creature instead: VAMPIRES.
